Shania Twain recently shared her struggles with body image and the extremes she went to in order to maintain a thin figure. During a candid discussion, Twain revealed that her pursuit of thinness led to harmful habits.
“I was malnourished,” Twain admitted to The Times while discussing her quest to be slimmer.
The changes brought on by menopause in 2019 forced Twain to reevaluate her relationship with her body. She remarked, “In menopause, you lose control of your body. Suddenly, I’m bloating and can’t simply shed five pounds like before. I felt I was not in control.” This led to a crisis of confidence.
“I stopped looking at myself in the mirror,” she recalled. “I hated my body and couldn’t stand the changes. But that mindset was unhealthy.”
Twain’s routine involved intense exercise and cutting out sugar and fats, pushing her body beyond its limits without proper nourishment. She acknowledged, “I was doing very unhealthy things to keep up with the strain.”
Ultimately, self-acceptance became a lesson learned from these challenges. “Now, I embrace mirrors. Menopause taught me that some things cannot be controlled,” Twain stated.
Twain’s career skyrocketed with her 1995 album “The Woman in Me,” marking her rise to global fame. Despite her success, she confessed to feeling uncomfortable in her skin from a young age.
“I was shy about my body since childhood,” Twain mentioned in a 2023 interview with “Extra.” “At 10, I struggled with it.”
On landing her first hit, “You’re Still the One,” released in 1998, Twain explored a different persona. The music video depicted a more confident version of herself.
“In that video, I was braless, stepping out of my daily self into this world of video-making. It was freeing,” she shared.
With more than three decades in the industry, Twain’s influence spans both country and pop. Known as the “Queen of Country Pop,” she’s sold over 100 million records worldwide, overcoming personal and professional challenges along the way.
Despite her achievements, Twain remains driven. “I won’t slow down,” she told The Times. “There’s always something new to discover, and I have an explorer’s heart.”
