On August 15, 2026, the U.S. Air Force C-17 Globemaster III was a remarkable sight as it flew across the skyline of Chicago. An F-22 Raptor amazed the crowd by creating a ‘shock collar’ or ‘vapor cone’, a phenomenon caused by sudden drops in air pressure during high-speed maneuvers over Lake Michigan.

Stunt pilots showcased their skills above North Avenue Beach, captivating the audience with daring aerial acrobatics. The concrete beach around the Montrose Harbor Observation Point was crowded with viewers eager to see the show.

The U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds

The U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds provided an impressive performance amidst dense cloud cover over the Lake Michigan waterfront. Unfortunately, their show was curtailed as weather conditions worsened.

Preparations for the event were visible on August 14, 2026. A Chicago Fire Department helicopter and boat were seen practicing at Lake Michigan near Oak Street Beach. A military jet executed high-speed maneuvers above the lake in preparation for the show.

Spectators gathered at Oak Street Beach to watch both helicopters and military jets practicing for the performance. The U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds were also spotted streaking over Lake Michigan during the pre-show activities.
