Envioscuba.com, a key online platform for Cubans in the U.S., has stopped taking orders, pressured by escalating U.S. sanctions against the Cuban government. These actions aim to cut off international support for Cuban businesses.
The platform, essential for sending money, food, and clothes to relatives in Cuba, announced the cessation of new orders. It assured that existing, approved orders would still be processed.
The website cited ‘reasons beyond our control’ as the cause of its shutdown. Attempts to contact the company were unsuccessful, as their website lacked contact details.
Emilio Morales, president of Havana Consulting Group, noted that platforms like Envioscuba.com operate through GAESA, a Cuban military-controlled conglomerate. Morales predicts that similar platforms will close to avoid sanctions.
Sanctions threaten foreign companies with asset freezes in the U.S., restricting their operations there. Spanish hotel chain Meliá recently declared it would close operations at 15 out of 34 Cuban hotels, adding to the list of businesses withdrawing from Cuba.
