Basketball fans are closely watching LeBron James’ next moves as the NBA offseason progresses. The possibility of James changing teams for the first time since 2018 is on the minds of many. However, it’s still unclear if he will explore options elsewhere or conclude his illustrious career.
Reports from ESPN suggest that representatives for James and the Los Angeles Lakers are actively engaged in discussions about the framework of a new contract. This could keep him with the Lakers if he decides to continue for a 24th season, a record tenure in the league.
Lakers forward LeBron James was seen on the Los Angeles court during the final moments of Game 4 in the second-round playoffs against the Oklahoma City Thunder on May 11, 2026. If he signs anew, it suggests a focus on maintaining his association with the Lakers, where he has played for the last eight seasons.
ESPN’s Brian Windhorst commented, “I think LeBron James’ intention is to play, and I think the focus right now is making a deal with the Lakers.” He continued, “Right now, he’s allowed to negotiate with the Lakers, and I believe they are negotiating. I believe they’re going back and forth.” Windhorst anticipates a decision within the next two weeks regarding a potential new contract with the Lakers.
“The Lakers need LeBron James ‘to return home to save the day,’ as ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith highlighted. James’ experience and leadership are seen as pivotal for the team’s success moving forward.”
Beyond the court, LeBron and his wife Savannah, who began dating during high school, have a close family life. They have three children, including Bronny James, who has shared NBA moments with his father in recent seasons. The couple captured a family moment at Crypto.com Arena on February 7, 2023, marked in a Getty Images photo.
In another engagement, James shared personal insights on the “Everybody’s Crazy” podcast in October 2025. Alongside personalities like YouTuber Kai Cenat, James discussed his upbringing, strong work ethic, and his approach to business.
The previous month brought disappointment for the Lakers as they were outperformed by the Oklahoma City Thunder in the Western Conference semifinals. James had been instrumental in their first-round victory against the Houston Rockets, even without the aid of key players Austin Reaves and Luka Doncic. Reaves managed to return for the semifinals, but Doncic remained sidelined with a hamstring injury from the regular season.
