A tragic train accident occurred in Belgium on Tuesday, as a train collided with a school minibus in Buggenhout, leading to multiple fatalities. The incident has left the country in mourning, with the exact number of casualties yet to be confirmed.
The collision took place near the railway crossing Vierhuizen in Buggenhout. Emergency services quickly arrived at the scene to attend to the victims, showing a harrowing picture of the minibus overturned with significant front-end damage.
Belgian Rail Network Operator spokesperson Frederic Sacre described the impact as extremely violent. The train was scheduled to stop at a station approximately a kilometer from the collision site.
Belgium’s interior minister Bernard Quintin expressed his sorrow over the event, sending condolences to the victims and their families. “With great dismay, I learnt of the tragic accident,” he wrote, expressing sympathy and wishing strength to the injured.
