Chicago Cubs: Ballesteros Optioned, Dean Recalled in Game Against Blue Jays

Chicago Cubs coach Jonathan Mota sat with young player Moisés Ballesteros on Wednesday night to help him understand the challenging news. The 22-year-old had learned that he would be sent to the minors, and outfielder Justin Dean would take his roster spot. Mota explained that this decision was not tied to performance issues. Instead, it was a strategic move aimed at giving Ballesteros regular playing time, which would benefit his development.

Ballesteros had been a strong presence at the start of the season. He was hitting .400 after an impressive game on April 24. However, his performance declined to .139 in subsequent games. This shift in performance, combined with the Cubs’ current lineup strategy, made the decision to move him to the minors logical. Manager Craig Counsell stated that Ballesteros needed more experience catching, which he would gain in Triple-A.

Meanwhile, the Cubs showcased their offensive strength in a dominating 16-2 victory against the Toronto Blue Jays at Wrigley Field. The Cubs sent 12 batters to the plate in the first inning and scored seven times, bolstered by Carson Kelly’s grand slam. The team executed a disciplined approach against Blue Jays’ starter Kevin Gausman, exploiting his weaknesses.

Recent games have shown signs of a turnaround for the Cubs’ offense. They averaged 6.5 runs in their last eight outings with a 6-2 record, contrasting sharply with earlier struggles. This improvement is highlighted by players like Pete Crow-Armstrong, who continues to extend his on-base streak.

Cubs pitcher Ben Brown delivered a strong performance in the game, pitching six innings and allowing two runs with four strikeouts. Despite ending his streak without giving up a home run, Brown’s overall performance remains a positive highlight this season.

Justin Dean replaced Ballesteros on the roster and made a significant impact. He hit a three-run triple in the seventh inning, marking his first major-league hit. Dean previously played with the Los Angeles Dodgers during their World Series run but valued his first hit immensely, planning to share the moment with his parents.
