Beagles Rescued from Wisconsin Facility Begin New Lives

Beagles Rescued from a Controversial Facility

For many beagles rescued from Wisconsin’s Ridglan Farms, life as they know it is changing. Previously confined to a breeding facility that provided animals for laboratory research, these dogs are now adapting to new experiences. Having been rescued, they are now discovering grass, stairs, toys, and affection for the first time.

“They right now don’t even know they’re dogs,” Paws of War co-founder Robert Misseri said.

Ridglan Farms recently released these beagles after a rescue deal. Misseri’s organization, Paws of War, specializes in training and placing shelter dogs with U.S. military veterans affected by the emotional impacts of war.

Transition to New Homes

These dogs are undergoing significant changes as they adjust to their forever homes. Learning to walk on grass, face stairs, and interact with humans is challenging for them. “When you see them and they’re shut down, that’s how they live,” Misseri explained.

Supporting the Transition

Misseri works with Director of Adoptions Jodie Cohen and a diligent team. They focus on helping the “traumatized little souls” adjust. This involves interviewing veterans and first responders for suitable matches and teaching dogs basic skills.

The dogs had never experienced leashes before. The team has to carry them initially and guide them on going potty, keeping runs clean, and preparing for adoption.

Building Lasting Relationships

The program is not just about adopting dogs; it’s about forming relationships. Adopters receive supplies and participate in free group obedience training. This creates lasting friendships and strengthens the adopter-dog bond.

Misseri highlights the program’s dual benefit. It helps both the dogs and adopters recover from trauma, fostering confidence. “The lives are being changed on both ends of the leash,” he added, emphasizing the strides made.
