A New York City Police Department officer shot a driver on Sunday as the driver attempted to flee authorities. The vehicle had been reported stolen, according to police. The incident involved a silver Kia Sportage, initially stolen from the Bronx.
Police tracked the vehicle using license plate readers, eventually locating it on West Fordham Road. Officers attempted to stop the vehicle, ordering both the driver and passenger to exit.

As police surrounded the car, the driver reversed, hitting several officers and an unmarked police vehicle, before driving forward and hitting another officer. Assistant Chief Aneudy Castillo, commanding officer of Patrol Borough Bronx North, explained this sequence of events. The driver then continued forward, striking a sergeant who was on the right side of the vehicle, causing the sergeant to fall to the ground.
An NYPD officer, positioned on a nearby vehicle, fired shots at the driver. The driver was taken to Saint Barnabas Hospital and is in stable condition. The officers involved also received medical attention at local hospitals, reported to be in stable condition.
The suspect, who faced a previous arrest in February for allegedly shooting another individual, was then charged with several felonies, such as attempted felony assault, reckless endangerment, and criminal possession of a firearm.
The incident, recorded by body-worn cameras, is currently under investigation, while charges against the driver of the stolen car are pending.
