Wyndham Clark Triumphs at U.S. Open Following Turbulent Year

1 week ago 0

After a challenging year in 2025, Wyndham Clark has bounced back by claiming his second career U.S. Open victory. He secured the win on Sunday, holding off Sam Burns during the final round.

Clark set a 36-hole record at Shinnecock Hills in the U.S. Open with a score of 7-under (133) after the first two rounds. Despite maintaining his lead after the third round, the situation became tense as he lost a six-stroke advantage. Burns nearly caught up, but his birdie putts missed on the last two holes.

Clark finished with a 3-over-73 in the final round, concluding the tournament at 4-under to clinch the victory. This marks a significant turnaround for Clark, who faced personal challenges last year at Oakmont Country Club in Pennsylvania, where he damaged two lockers.

“New York didn’t really like me. I love you guys,” Clark stated during his interview with Mike Tirico after the win.

Clark expressed remorse for previous actions, stating, “I get it. Some of it’s self-deserved, and it’s unfortunate things last year that I really regret. I’m still sorry, so hopefully I can win you guys over eventually.”

He became the ninth golfer to achieve a wire-to-wire victory at the U.S. Open. This list includes notable names like Rory McIlroy in 2011 and Tiger Woods in 2000 and 2002.

Clark’s win came despite the New York crowd’s support for Scottie Scheffler, who celebrated his 30th birthday on Sunday. Scheffler was second on the leaderboard at one point, increasing anticipation for his potential first Grand Slam.

The crowd’s enthusiasm was also fueled by Clark’s previous outburst at Oakmont and Scheffler’s standout performance. Still, Clark remained focused, overcoming Burns and the pro-Scheffler atmosphere.

Clark had not won any tournaments last year, following a locker room incident and subsequent club ban. In recent months, he won two tournaments, including The CJ Cup Byron Nelson, indicating a change in his career trajectory.

His latest U.S. Open victory and supportive comments towards Scheffler further demonstrate his progress. Clark has now won his second career major, signifying a hopeful future. For extensive coverage on the U.S. Open and golf, visit Newsweek Sports.
