MLB Commissioner Addresses Controversy Over Giants Players’ Pride Night Actions

1 week ago 0

Major League Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred assured that San Francisco Giants players who included Bible verse references on their Pride Night hats will not face penalties. This assurance came amidst discussions over the league’s uniform policy.

Oral Warning Issued

In a letter dated June 19, Manfred explained that the MLB office gave a “routine oral warning” to Giants players. This was after they embellished their Pride-themed hats with biblical references. However, it was later recognized that the Giants hadn’t clearly informed their players that they could choose to wear regular caps instead. Consequently, players weren’t fined or disciplined for their actions.

While the majority adhered to wearing Pride Night gear, reliever Sam Hentges opted for the standard team cap during the event.

Senator’s Involvement

Senator Josh Hawley viewed the MLB’s stance as an acknowledgment of overstepping boundaries by cautioning players over their expressions of faith. Hawley had previously questioned the league’s rationale for the warning, querying if it was a reaction to players openly displaying their Christian beliefs.

Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon mentioned that the Justice Department flagged the incident to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, citing possible religious discrimination issues with MLB’s approach.

Genesis Passage Reference

The controversy emerged on June 12 during the Giants’ Pride Night game. Pitchers Landen Roupp and others penned Bible verse references on their rainbow-emblazoned caps. Roupp preferred Genesis 9:12-16, a passage symbolizing God’s covenant post-flood, represented by a rainbow.

Uniform Policy Clarification

According to Manfred, MLB’s rules prohibit any modification of uniforms or equipment. This policy, established in agreement with the MLB Players Association, ensures players do not use apparel to disseminate messages. The rule is applied impartially regardless of the message’s subject.

Manfred clarified the rule prevents players from promoting political or social causes in uniform, as such messages might alienate some fans. However, respect for players’ religious beliefs remains a priority, and Manfred noted MLB avoids obligating participation in events clashing with personal values.

Exceptions and Challenges

This is not MLB’s first encounter with controversies related to Pride-themed attire. In 2022, some Rays players opted out of wearing the logo, while former Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw used the same Genesis reference on his Pride cap.

Manfred affirmed that a new policy in 2023 generally restricts clubs from using special uniforms unless specific stipulations are met. However, exceptions exist for the Dodgers and Giants, aligning with their earnest support for substantial local LGBTQ+ communities.

He admitted communication shortcomings with the Giants’ players, attributing it to the improper assumption of use of customized hats being the only choice.

Moving forward, Manfred reiterated MLB’s support for the rights of players and fans to express their beliefs while sustaining a uniform alteration ban. This aims to ensure fairness in regulating expressions during games. Manfred committed to evolving policies that respect diverse values across the league.
