Fox News has reported on recent criticism directed at Long Island golf fans following the U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills. Golf Channel analyst Eamon Lynch expressed his belief that this region should no longer host major golf tournaments due to unsportsmanlike behavior during the event.
Lynch described Long Island fans as detrimental to the sport, particularly after witnessing negative incidents at Shinnecock Hills. During Wyndham Clark’s second U.S. Open win, some fans heckled him by shouting, “Don’t choke Wyndham” and “Get in the bunker” during his final round.
The criticism wasn’t isolated to this event. Lynch pointed out that similar behavior was observed at Bethpage Black, where players like Rory McIlroy faced taunts during the Ryder Cup. This included instances where McIlroy had to address hecklers, and his wife, Erica Stoll, even had a beer thrown at her.
This isn’t a New York problem,Lynch stressed, stating that this conduct is specific to Long Island events. He urged that such behavior should never be accepted in golf, which should maintain higher standards.
Despite these issues, the PGA of America plans to hold the PGA Championship at Bethpage Black in 2033. However, Lynch argues that measures similar to those at Augusta National for the Masters, such as bans on phones and zero tolerance for disruptions, could be essential to maintain decorum.
Controversy surrounded Wyndham Clark at the championship as well. His past offenses, including a ban from Oakmont for property damage, have made him a controversial figure. Nonetheless, Lynch emphasized the importance of fan behavior, suggesting Long Island patrons haven’t adhered to the expected standards.
