Switzerland defeated Canada 2-1 in a World Cup match in Vancouver, securing the top spot in Group B. Goals from Rubén Vargas and Johan Manzambi sealed the victory for the Swiss team. This win allows Switzerland some rest before facing one of the best third-place finishers on July 2 in the same city.

Swiss coach Murat Yakin expressed confidence in his team’s achievement. He noted, “In three days, we will know our next opponent. For now, we have the chance to observe the tournament and prepare for what comes next.”

Canada, finishing second in the group, will advance to the knockout round, a first in team history. However, this means traveling to Inglewood, California, for their next game against the Group A runner-up. Canadian coach Jesse Marsch acknowledged the disappointment of not playing in Vancouver but remained optimistic about the team’s future.

After coming off the bench to score twice in Switzerland’s previous match, Manzambi started against Canada. Vargas opened the scoring in the second half with a quick strike that eluded Canada’s goalkeeper, Maxime Crépeau. Manzambi soon doubled the score with a shot that slipped through Crépeau’s fingers.

Canada managed to score in the 76th minute through Promise David, who scored with his first touch. Despite creating several chances, Canada could not equalize. The match saw attendance from Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and CONCACAF President Victor Montagliani.

Earlier, Canada defeated Qatar 6-0 in a historic victory but with a downside. Ismaël Koné suffered a broken leg, adding to the team’s injury woes. Coach Marsch highlighted the resilience of his team despite these challenges, praising their performance in the tournament.

The Swiss had a modest start to the World Cup with a 1-1 draw against Qatar but gained momentum with a strong win over Bosnia. With experience from five consecutive World Cups, Switzerland’s prowess was expected in the competition.

Canada showed resilience in their third World Cup appearance. They opened with a 2-2 draw against Bosnia, proving competitive despite numerous hurdles. Marsch applauded his team’s spirit, acknowledging the small margins that separated triumph from the eventual result.

In other Group B action, Bosnia defeated Qatar 3-1, keeping their hopes alive for advancement, while Qatar exited the tournament.
