Chicago Cubs Battling Injuries in 2026 Season

2 hours ago 0

Before the Chicago Cubs secured a 3-2 victory over the San Diego Padres on Monday, manager Craig Counsell revealed more injury woes. Matt Shaw and Ethan Roberts joined the growing list of injured players this season. The 2026 campaign began with promise, encountered setbacks, and now navigates a summer of soaring temperatures above 90 degrees with winds affecting gameplay.

With a record of 46-38, some fans may be surprised at the Cubs’ standing as the All-Star break approaches. Despite inconsistent hitting and numerous pitching injuries, they remain in contention. Counsell acknowledges the hurdles but remains focused. “Challenges occur in every major-league season,” he stated, noting the high count of pitching injuries. “If not this, it would be something else,” he added.

The Cubs aimed for a 90-plus win season, with hopes of making a postseason impact. A 27-12 start brought optimism, even as problems arose with Cade Horton’s injury and Alex Bregman’s struggles. Injuries and offensive setbacks continued, affecting players like Dansby Swanson and Pete Crow-Armstrong. However, since Crow-Armstrong’s viral incident with a White Sox fan, he has been excelling at the plate.

“I don’t need anybody to believe in me,” Crow-Armstrong expressed, referencing the clubhouse support he receives.

Crow-Armstrong emphasized self-awareness, “I enjoy being realistic with myself.” Counsell supports players showing emotion and stated, “Beating themselves up is part of their process before it becomes public.”

Bregman has struggled publicly, with a .163 average and .335 slugging percentage. He has acknowledged hitting difficulties but focuses on swinging at preferable pitches inside the strike zone. Counsell commented, “Alex is working on driving the baseball daily.” Bregman’s cautious approach to avoid injury while running the bases has been noted, as he explained his past “soft tissue injuries.” Despite fan frustrations, the focus remains on improvement.

The Cubs need Bregman’s resurgence to stay competitive. They can look to Swanson’s performance in New York as evidence of potential turnaround. Counsell noted no immediate trade aid is expected, so solving pitching issues rests with existing resources. Counsell, brought to the Cubs for his problem-solving skills, aims to guide the team into the postseason.
