The Boston Celtics attempted to acquire Giannis Antetokounmpo, offering Jaylen Brown and two unprotected first-round picks. However, the Milwaukee Bucks chose a different route, sending him to the Miami Heat. Now, the Celtics continue to explore trade options for the 2024 Finals MVP, Jaylen Brown. Since then, Brown’s trade value has increased significantly.
According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the Celtics now seek at least four first-round picks in exchange for Brown. At 29 years old, Brown is coming off a stellar season, averaging 28.7 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 5.1 assists per game, earning second-team All-NBA honors. Several teams have shown interest, including the Denver Nuggets, Los Angeles Clippers, Portland Trail Blazers, and Charlotte Hornets, yet no agreement has been reached.
On ESPN’s “Get Up,” Vince Goodwill criticized the Celtics’ management of the situation. “The Celtics have mishandled this from the start,” Goodwill expressed. “If you decide to trade Jaylen Brown for Giannis Antetokounmpo, you should invest every resource because risks like this could arise. You have a player on the market, and the league does not perceive the trade value as you do. It appears embarrassing for Brown, who never requested a trade.”
Goodwill continued, “Typically, when players are offered like this, it’s because they don’t want to remain, or refuse to re-sign. That isn’t the case here. If the Celtics are tired of Jaylen Brown, that’s their choice. But leaving him out like this, after his significant contribution to the team and franchise, is disrespectful and embarrassing.”
In other news, Jaylen Brown reportedly feels frustrated with the Celtics as Boston faces limited options. Simultaneously, Kawhi Leonard might leave Los Angeles amid ongoing Los Angeles Clippers and Toronto Raptors trade discussions. Leonard’s scenario differs, centered on a stalled contract extension, while Toronto seems amenable to a long-term agreement.
In contrast, Brown never demanded a trade or paused his participation. He hasn’t pursued a new contract and has consistently delivered top-tier performances, leading the Celtics to 56 wins and a No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference. Despite this, Boston continues to shop him.
Thus far, when a team is resolute in trading a player of Brown’s caliber, it is usually because the player is disgruntled or there is a financial stalemate with management. Neither applies here, as Brown aided Boston in securing an NBA title two years ago.
Ultimately, it now seems improbable that Brown will stay with the Celtics. The pressing question is whether Boston can find any team willing to give up four first-round picks despite losing leverage in the process.
