CBD Treats for Dogs: A Solution for Firework Anxiety

Fireworks can be a source of anxiety for dogs, even those that are typically relaxed. CBD treats have become popular among dog owners to help calm their pets during such stressful times. To prepare for the Fourth of July, SunKissed Greenz, LLC, a CBD shop located in Mokena, offered free calming treats to dog owners.

CBD, or cannabidiol, is derived from cannabis but does not contain THC, the compound that causes a high. The store provides products for humans with varying THC content. Misty Nelson, who launched her store online during the pandemic and opened a physical location in 2022, has cultivated loyal customers who visit with their canine companions.

“This one is really scared around the 4th of July, so the treats here completely helped,” said Kelly Garver from New Lenox about her 11-year-old Staffie mix, Sadie.

Personal Accounts and Benefits

Garver visits the shop with Sadie and another dog, Valerio. She administers CBD oil to Valerio’s breakfast daily. CBD had also assisted a previous dog undergoing cancer treatment. As a regular user of CBD herself, Garver trusts Nelson’s products, noting they are made locally.

Misty Nelson’s husband, Bryan, plays a role in making the dog treats. Her own experiences with a 15-year-old dog suffering seizures inspired the store’s creation. The dog’s seizure frequency decreased with CBD treatment, improving her quality of life.

Advice and Activities

Nelson advises caution with dosage and suggests pet owners begin with a low amount, gradually increasing based on need. She emphasizes careful monitoring due to potential side effects such as fatigue, thirst, or digestive issues.

SunKissed Greenz engages in community activities, supporting organizations like NAWS and Cache Creek Animal Rescue through adoption events and fundraising activities. Nelson hosts dog yoga events that contribute to these causes.

“Keeping pets in a small room with calming music during fireworks can help them stay centered and feel more safe,” mentioned Becca Keller from NAWS.

Veterinarian Perspectives

Veterinarians like April Finan and Ward Phillips acknowledge the potential benefits of CBD but urge caution due to limited research. Finan uses CBD for her Spanish Galgos and advises pet owners about the lack of FDA approval.

Finan highlights the importance of product quality and third-party testing by reputable CBD manufacturers. She sometimes opts for established medications if CBD does not suffice.

Phillips emphasizes the need for advance preparation and medication when necessary, especially during events like July Fourth fireworks.
