Progressive Faces Defeat in Wisconsin Democratic Primary

The recent Democratic gubernatorial primary in Wisconsin saw state Rep. Francesca Hong, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, narrowly lose to Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley. This election was a crucial test for the Democratic Party, examining the balance between its progressive and establishment factions as they prepare for the upcoming general election in November.

Francesca Hong faced criticism around her electability among Wisconsin Democratic voters. Many were concerned that her progressive stance might not appeal to a broad electorate. Despite having a considerable lead in earlier polls, these concerns ultimately played a significant role in her defeat.

“I would’ve liked to have voted for her, but I wasn’t sure she would win. So, I voted for Crowley,” said Linda Pullman, a Madison native, expressing the sentiments of many local Democrats.

Hong’s far-left political positions, such as abolishing the U.S. Senate and other extreme views, amplified concerns about her electability. These positions, coupled with her difficulty in retracting previous statements, led to voter reservations. Retiring Democratic Governor Tony Evers supported Crowley, emphasizing that nominating Hong could endanger Democratic control of the governor’s office in November.

Crowley’s victory positions him against Republican nominee Rep. Tom Tiffany in the general election. Tiffany, who enjoys support from President Donald Trump, provides the Republican Party a strong opportunity to gain ground in a key race. Many Crowley supporters believed that his moderate stance provided a better chance to defeat Tiffany statewide.

“Seeing Hong was not doing so well against Tom Tiffany … [factory-set my decision],” explained Tim, a voter who ultimately chose Crowley.

Some voters highlighted Hong’s previous controversial remarks, including her thoughts on defunding the police, as significant factors against her. These stances made it difficult for swing voters to support her, creating reluctance among more centrist constituents.

Hong garnered endorsements from prominent national progressives like Reps. Ilhan Omar and Ro Khanna. However, Sen. Bernie Sanders refrained from endorsing her due to unfamiliarity with her campaign.
