Queen Camilla Faces Backlash Over J.K. Rowling Meeting

2 hours ago 0

Queen Camilla encountered criticism on Tuesday after sharing a photo with “Harry Potter” author J.K. Rowling. The image, posted on the royal family’s Instagram, captured their meeting at the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh. The caption read: “With a shared passion for books and a deep commitment to children reading for pleasure, The Queen and author J.K. Rowling have met.” They discussed the importance of access to books for young people, emphasizing how reading opens doors for future generations.

A critic expressed disappointment in the comments, highlighting the timing of the photo during Pride Month. They suggested spotlighting other individuals who promote reading for children. “As an admirer of the Queen and her Reading Room, I’m deeply disappointed,” the commenter remarked.

Rowling has previously clashed with the transgender community due to her controversial statements. In 2023, she disagreed with the statement “Trans women are women,” stating she would endure penal consequences over being forced to deny her beliefs about sex.

This controversy followed encouragement for Rowling to support a political party considering criminalizing attacks on gender identity. In a 2020 essay, she expressed her desire for safety for trans women while maintaining that natal girls and women should not face compromise in their security.

Comments on the post were divided, with some highlighting the timing during Pride Month, while others supported Rowling and acknowledged her contributions. Trans pride flags and supportive messages for trans rights appeared among the comments.

Despite the backlash, Rowling had her defenders. Some stated she was entitled to her opinion, describing the meeting as featuring “two remarkable women.” Praise included acknowledgments of Rowling encouraging reading and supporting women’s rights. One supporter noted that Rowling declined a prestigious honor she was offered.

Past criticisms from “Harry Potter” movie actors, including Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson, have surfaced, though Watson valued her time with Rowling.
