Adina Sash’s Online Fight for Orthodox Jewish Women

2 hours ago 0

Under the social media handle Flatbush Girl, Adina Sash employs her internet expertise to call out men who refuse to grant their wives a Jewish divorce. Sash is a unique blend of activist and influencer, dedicated to helping Orthodox women she believes feel trapped in their marriages.

Central to Sash’s mission is her work with agunot, or ‘chained women,’ who are unable to obtain a religious divorce, known as a get. This issue took center stage when Sash received multiple Instagram messages about a man using the pseudonym Nathan Gettisberg, who appeared on a podcast to discuss Jewish divorce. Listeners recognized the voice as Raphi Stein, who had been linked to a contentious separation and had allegedly refused his wife a get.

Sash’s response was quick and calculated. Instead of directly contacting Stein or his wife, Adeena Kohn, she publicly denounced the podcast network and sought information from her 100,000 followers. Initially unaware of Kohn’s full identity, Sash learned it through a mutual acquaintance who confirmed Kohn’s desire for privacy.

Sash’s approach to advocating for agunot often includes crowdfunding and raising public awareness. Though she sometimes receives compensation for her activism, in this instance, she decided to embark on a public campaign because of the attention already surrounding Stein’s case. Kohn, through a representative, chose not to comment on the ongoing situation.
