Two masked individuals climbed the Empire State Building at midday on Wednesday. They displayed a banner with the message, “when the power of love beats the love of power, the world knows peace.” This prompted a response from the New York City Police Department (NYPD) Emergency Services Unit.
After the banner was removed, the pair descended to a lower platform. One of them then produced an engagement ring and proposed. Following the incident, the couple was taken into custody. NYPD officials reported that charges are pending. Thankfully, no injuries occurred. The method they used to climb the building remains unclear.
Around 40 police officers were stationed near the building with others managing traffic in the area. The entrance on Fifth Avenue, between West 33rd and 34th streets, was blocked off. Many pedestrians gathered to watch the event unfold.
Adding context, the Empire State Building, with its spire and antenna, measures 1,454 feet tall. It is the fourth-tallest building in New York City, sixth-tallest in the U.S., and the 43rd tallest worldwide.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has not commented on the stunt. His office has not issued a statement following Fox News Digital’s request.
