Ukrainian Fighters Highlight Bastille Day Parade Amid European Unity

Ukrainian fighter pilots and troops were featured prominently in France’s Bastille Day celebrations. The parade showcased European solidarity with Ukraine amidst ongoing regional tensions. French President Emmanuel Macron hosted around 30 other leaders, aiming to demonstrate unity and defense capabilities to Russia’s Vladimir Putin and to former U.S. President Donald Trump.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy received an ovation from European leaders as he arrived. Ukrainian troops were cheered on by crowds along the Champs-Elysees. Zelenskyy and Macron exchanged hugs after the event.

Challenges and Traditions of Bastille Day

Bastille Day coincided with forest fires and a red-alert heat wave, which led to the cancellation of traditional fireworks and firefighter festivities. Bastille Day commemorates the storming of the Bastille in 1789, marking the start of the French Revolution. Celebrated on July 14, it is central to France’s national identity.

The Paris parade, held under the Arc de Triomphe, is a key event. This year, it included a huge French flag, a military band on horseback, and Macron in an open military vehicle. Spectators used hats and fans to contend with the heat, while air force planes flew over, leaving trails of colored smoke.

Ukraine as the Parade’s Special Guest

Zelenskyy stood alongside Macron and other heads of state in a special viewing area. Ukrainian troops participated in the parade, with trained co-pilots featured in Mirage 2000B fighter jets. Lance Cpl. Patrick Risso of the U.K. expressed pride, hoping for strengthened ties with NATO.

Troops from Across Europe Participating

About 500 soldiers from the “coalition of the willing” countries, supporting Ukraine’s postwar security, opened the parade. Macron highlighted the honor of hosting partners and Ukrainian allies. The showcase included foreign troops marching with their national flags. It was notable as the first participation of British troops in 20 years. Ukrainian forces received significant applause.

Aircraft from various European countries contributed to the event. This year’s parade set a record for troop numbers, with 7,600 soldiers marching compared to 5,810 in 2025. Soldiers began positioning early, capturing selfies as helicopters soared above.

Heatwave Affecting Bastille Day Celebrations

France faced forest fires, notably in Fontainebleau and southern regions. The country endured its third heat wave this year. Consequently, some regions, including Paris, banned customary fireworks and firefighter balls around Bastille Day. Despite bans, the Eiffel Tower’s fireworks and drone show proceeded as planned.
