Native American Artist at Orland Park Library
Chicago-based artist Negwes White will present his exhibit “Here & Now: An Urban Native Voice” at the Orland Park Public Library. The event runs from 10:30 a.m. to noon on July 11 in Large Meeting Room 104 at 14921 S. Ravinia Ave. White, who has heritage from Walpole Island Ojibwe, Guachuchil from Mexico, and Diné from Arizona, will share Native American stories, a traditional Plains Indian grass dance, and insights into his creative process. Oak Lawn Students Shine in Art Contest
Oak Lawn Community High School students showcased their creative talents in the Illinois PTA Reflections program. This national arts initiative, in its 55th year, incorporates mediums such as film, literature, music composition, visual arts, photography, and dance. Of the 37 submissions from the school, 15 advanced to the state level, including Addison Clark, Peyton Marshall, Erin Sprull-Pennington, and others. Honorable mentions went to Weronica Makary, Mikayla Vazquez, Nathaniel Vega, and Jake Herpich. Addison Clark, Emily Prado, and Peyton Marshall moved forward to the regional level and qualified for national judging.
Scholarships from Tinley Park-Frankfort Rotary Club
The Tinley Park-Frankfort Rotary Club has awarded $1,000 scholarships to three local students: Elizabeth Ardagh, Caden Wolfe, and Gavin Hemminger. Scholarships are given to students exemplifying the motto “Service Above Self.” Elizabeth plans to study biological sciences and neuroscience at the University of Notre Dame, Caden will study special education at DePaul University, and Gavin will pursue biology at Georgia Institute of Technology. Underground Railroad History Picnic
The Crete Historical Society and Midwest Underground Railroad Network will host a community picnic and educational program on July 11 from noon to 2 p.m. at Schubert Woods Pavilion in the Cook County Forest Preserve. Participants should bring their food and seating, while drinks and treats will be provided. Professor Larry McClellan will guide a hike to the McCoy Homestead at 11 a.m. and deliver a presentation at lunchtime. A representative from the Crete Historical Society will discuss local Underground Railroad activities. Performers Lana Lewis and Al “The Voice” Mack will provide music. Tinley Park Country Fest
Tinley Park Country Fest celebrates the 250th anniversary of the U.S. from July 3 to 5 at the Metra station at 18001 S. 80th Ave. Events include performances by Ashley Walls, Eric Chesser, and others; rib vendors, breweries, carnival rides, and a fireworks display are part of the festivities.
