The Democratic Party is experiencing a shift as progressive candidates gain momentum. Melat Kiros, a socialist candidate backed by the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), recently defeated 14-term incumbent Rep. Diana DeGette in Denver. This victory represents the 27th progressive primary win, highlighting a growing trend within the party.
High-profile victories in New York City and Colorado have set the stage for upcoming Democratic contests in states like Missouri, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Florida. The DSA lauded Kiros’ win, emphasizing the need for leaders focused on the working class. Former Rep. Cori Bush, another DSA-supported candidate, plans to reclaim her Missouri seat in a contested primary.
Bush, a nurse and activist, previously unseated Democratic Rep. Lacy Clay in 2020 but lost renomination two years later to Wesley Bell, who had significant financial backing. Now, Bush is engaged in a rematch with Clay in Missouri’s 1st Congressional District.
In Michigan, Abdul El-Sayed, endorsed by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, seeks to fill the seat of retiring Sen. Gary Peters. El-Sayed’s campaign is part of a broader push by the progressive wing to influence the party’s direction. On social media, he expressed confidence in grassroots movements overcoming external financial influences.
Wisconsin and Florida are also in focus as state Rep. Francesca Hong and Oliver Larkin challenge more moderate Democratic figures. These contests are part of a strategy to expand progressive influence beyond traditionally liberal strongholds like New York and Colorado.
Kiros, supported by Justice Democrats, which backed figures such as Ocasio-Cortez and other squad members, exemplifies the rising challenge to established Democrats. Hasan Piker, a known progressive commentator, expressed optimism about the potential for left-populist politics nationwide.
In Colorado’s 8th Congressional District, State Rep. Manny Rutinel defeated the moderate Shannon Bird, setting up a general election race with Republican Rep. Gabe Evans. This district’s outcome could influence the GOP’s hold on its slim House majority.
Democratic strategist Joe Caiazzo pointed to the progressive movement’s ability to mobilize support and offer alternatives to the status quo. While mainstream Democrats continue winning primaries, the progressive victories are drawing significant media attention.
Republican leaders see an opportunity to label Democrats as radical. President Donald Trump warns of a “communist” threat, while Vice President JD Vance criticizes the Democratic view of the United States. These messages aim to capitalize on the perceived leftward shift of the Democratic Party.
