Francesca Hong, a state legislator, is seeking to become governor of Wisconsin. Her goal is to demonstrate the ability of a democratic socialist to succeed in a politically competitive state. While her candidacy excites some, others argue she might inadvertently help Republicans win.
Jeff Hanneman, a resident of Wisconsin Rapids, grew upset when plans emerged to build a large data center on a former paper mill site in his area. Concerned about possible environmental harm to the Wisconsin River, Hanneman, who is a Republican supporter of President Trump, chose to back Hong, a democratic socialist. ‘I don’t care about labels,’ Hanneman expressed, and planted ‘Francesca Hong for Governor’ signs alongside his protest signs.
Hong, an elected state representative and former restaurant owner, aims to attract Republican voters. Her campaign comes amidst a rising progressive movement this election season. Many liberals, dissatisfied with a Democratic establishment they view as ineffective and corporate-focused, have successfully replaced incumbents with more socialist-leaning candidates. This trend is especially notable in areas such as New York City, Denver, and Philadelphia.
Wisconsin remains uncertain territory. The state backed Trump in 2024, and Hong faces formidable competition from within her party before potentially confronting a Republican opponent. Some Democrats worry moderate and conservative voters will reject socialism outright.
