Cubs Focus on Pitching as Trade Deadline Approaches

1 hour ago 0

The Chicago Cubs, led by Jed Hoyer, are intensifying efforts to bolster their pitching staff before the August 3 trade deadline. Yet, significant headlines are unlikely as team adjustments resemble the recent minor league promotion of left-hander Drew Pomeranz from Triple-A Iowa. Hoyer acknowledged the limited availability of trade candidates stating, “Not many teams are ready to move players right now. We’ll keep making small moves, patch holes, and hopefully find long-term contributors.”

The need for pitching became evident when the St. Louis Cardinals overpowered the Cubs, handing them a 17-1 defeat. Left-hander David Peterson, a recent acquisition from the New York Mets, struggled by giving up 10 runs in under four innings. This outing echoed issues that saw the Mets transition him to the bullpen.

The Cubs’ injury woes continue with many pitchers, including key starters from the opening-day rotation, still sidelined. Injuries to Ben Brown and Edward Cabrera intensified the Cubs’ trade talks with the Mets. Currently, there are only five teams in both leagues trailing more than nine games behind a playoff spot.

The Cubs expect potential trades to unfold nearing the deadline due to upcoming drafts consuming teams’ attention. Hoyer noted, “Not many sellers are in play, and the standings dictate movement close to the deadline.” The looming offseason lockout brings additional uncertainty. Teams may hesitate to trade for control-pitchers through 2027 without clarity on league stability.

Pomeranz returns, aiming to recapture his past highs. At 37, he has an opportunity after an IL opening arose from Hoby Milner’s recent surgery. The Cubs hope Pomeranz can replicate his 2025 performance when he achieved an ERA of 2.17 over 57 games. “Drew is similar to last year’s form, which makes this move worthwhile,” said manager Craig Counsell.

Ahead of the Cubs-Cardinals game, Pete Crow-Armstrong earned the National League Player of the Month title for June, marking notable achievements with a .381 average and 11 home runs. Crow-Armstrong appreciated the recognition alongside Tampa Bay’s Junior Caminero, stating, “It’s an honor, yet many achievements lie ahead.”
