President Donald Trump has influenced this year’s U.S. Senate landscape by sidelining certain Republican incumbents and endorsing loyalists as their replacements. A central question now is whether he will financially support these changes.
With the November elections four months away, it remains unclear how much MAGA Inc., which holds $382 million, plans to spend on key races. Despite Senate Republican leaders urging Trump’s team to fund these decisions, no commitments have been announced.
Focus on Texas
One significant battleground is Texas. Trump endorsed conservative Ken Paxton over Sen. John Cornyn, a decision some Republicans say has transformed a secure election into a competitive race. This change might pull resources from other crucial areas. Democratic candidate James Talarico, a state lawmaker, targets Paxton’s past corruption allegations in his campaign.
“The president picked Paxton, and he’s got $350 million dollars,” Cornyn told Semafor, hinting at Trump’s financial responsibility.
Challenges in North Carolina
In North Carolina, Sen. Thom Tillis chose not to seek reelection following a disagreement with Trump on healthcare spending. Trump supports Michael Whatley, a former Republican National Committee chair. Democrats view former Gov. Roy Cooper as a strong contender for the seat. Some Republican campaign leaders anticipate MAGA Inc. will contribute to Whatley’s campaign, as North Carolina’s media markets can be costly.
Republicans can expect support from well-funded official party committees, which the Supreme Court recently permitted to make unlimited direct contributions to campaigns. Still, this does not match the $382 million MAGA Inc. holds. Although Trump cannot run again due to constitutional restrictions, he began fundraising after securing a second term, hosting events at his resorts where tickets sold for $1 million each.
MAGA Inc.’s Strategy
James Blair, former White House political director, indicated Trump would use significant resources to win the midterms but was non-specific about plans in a podcast interview. As a super PAC, MAGA Inc. can raise unlimited funds but cannot coordinate with individual candidates or national committees, adding uncertainty to its strategy. Recent internal meetings at Washington’s Waldorf Astoria aimed to assemble teams who previously supported Trump’s campaigns.
Trump has spent considerable effort challenging Republicans who have opposed him, considering Cornyn disloyal. This resulted in Cornyn losing his primary to a Trump-backed candidate, impacting Senate Republicans worried about defending Paxton’s seat. The Senate Leadership Fund, aligned with Senate Majority Leader John Thune, plans to spend on Texas ads, though its primary commitments lie elsewhere.
Senate Leadership and Spending
Democrats need to gain four seats for a majority and focus on Alaska, Maine, North Carolina, and Ohio. The Senate Leadership Fund intends to spend $342 million across these states along with Iowa, Georgia, Michigan, and New Hampshire.
After Paxton’s May 26 nomination win, he had a friendly meeting with Thune, discussing collaboration. Later, Thune suggested Trump should fund a candidate Senate Republicans did not seek.
“We will do what we need to do to ensure the state stays red,” Thune told reporters, expressing hope for Trump’s financial involvement.
The race is expected to be costly, raising questions about MAGA Inc.’s role in it.
