Several visitors to Washington, D.C.’s Great American State Fair required hospitalization due to extreme heat conditions. The event was temporarily halted on Friday as temperatures soared into triple digits across the capital, according to the National Weather Service.

A heat dome affected much of the eastern U.S., with forecasts suggesting numerous daily records could be broken. In response, Freedom 250 announced the fair’s closure until Friday evening, prioritizing the safety of attendees and staff.

Medical Emergencies at the Fair

DC Fire and EMS reported 44 patient contacts prior to the fair’s closure, with 11 needing hospital treatment. Of these, seven received advanced life support, and four received basic life support. Over a dozen of the cases were related to heat illness and injury. Medical support from the Department of Health and Human Services and George Washington University Hospital was present on-site.

The fair and the FIFA Fan Zone were scheduled to reopen later, with event organizers encouraging guests to stay hydrated, wear lightweight clothing, and use shade or cooling areas. They provided free water stations, cooling tents, and air-conditioned buses throughout the event site. Additionally, all 15 large pavilion structures between 4th Street and 14th Street offered air-conditioned relief.

One attendee found respite from the heat in a baptism pool inside a religious tent. She described seeking help after feeling faint from the oppressive temperatures and finding temporary relief in the water.

Independence Day Weather Forecast

The National Weather Service forecasted scattered showers and thunderstorms for July 4th in the capital. Temperatures might reach a high of 102 degrees, with the heat index pushing perceived temperatures to 113 degrees. Saturday night could see more showers and thunderstorms, with temperatures dropping to a low of 75 degrees and a 60 percent chance of rain.
