NASCAR Star Kyle Busch Dies From Pneumonia Leading to Sepsis

1 month ago 0

NASCAR legend Kyle Busch tragically passed away following a severe case of pneumonia that developed into sepsis. This information was shared by the Busch family in a statement on Saturday.

The medical evaluation provided to the Busch Family concluded that severe pneumonia progressed into sepsis, resulting in rapid and overwhelming associated complications.

Busch, renowned for having the most victories in NASCAR’s top three series, died unexpectedly on Thursday after he fainted the previous day inside a driving simulator at a General Motors facility located in Concord, North Carolina.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention describe sepsis as a dangerous condition where the body’s extreme response to infection leads to tissue and organ damage.

The Busch family’s statement was the first since Thursday. Previously, they communicated via social media explaining Busch’s hospitalization due to a severe illness, which would result in him missing the weekend’s Coca-Cola 600—one of NASCAR’s major events.

The 41-year-old driver had symptoms like shortness of breath, overheating, and coughing up blood on the day before his demise, as revealed by a 911 call made available to CBS News.

During the emergency call, an unidentified caller describes Busch’s distress, stating: “I’ve got an individual that’s shortness of breath, very hot, thinks he’s going to pass out, and he’s producing a little bit of blood, coughing up some blood.” Busch was found conscious on the bathroom floor of the complex according to the Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office.

Two weeks prior, Busch was competing in a Cup race at Watkins Glen, where he requested a medical evaluation post-race due to dealing with a sinus cold, as indicated by a TV broadcast.

Despite these health issues, Busch secured a win at the Craftsman Truck Series race held on May 15 at Dover Motor Speedway, just days before his untimely death.

Busch won NASCAR Cup Series titles in 2015 and 2019 while driving for Joe Gibbs Racing. He holds the record in the O’Reilly Auto Parts Series with 102 wins and the Craftsman Truck Series with 69 wins. Combined with 63 wins in the Cup Series, he achieved a total of 234 victories, marking the highest in NASCAR’s three top divisions.
