A report released on July 4 criticizes the National Museum of American History for its approach to presenting American history. The report, issued by the White House’s Domestic Policy Council, argues that the museum downplays the contributions of the nation’s founders and emphasizes themes of social justice instead.
The report states, “The story told at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History is not one of ‘the victory of freedom and genius of our country’ but one of regret, tragedy, and shame.” This criticism aligns with a campaign by the Trump administration to promote what it describes as “patriotic” history.
The 162-page document accuses the museum of moving away from objective historical education towards a politically motivated narrative. It claims that the museum has exhibited an anti-white bias and has minimized and distorted the events surrounding the nation’s founding.
Titled “Saving America’s Story: How Ideological Capture at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of American History Erases Our Heritage,” the report alleges that the museum fails to present U.S. history clearly and fairly. It argues that rather than expanding historical narratives or correcting past oversights, the museum’s leadership has adopted an ideological stance that divides and discourages Americans.
