The Trump administration will not pursue new bids for repairing the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum confirmed this decision on Sunday amidst ongoing scrutiny regarding the project’s issues and associated taxpayer costs.
Burgum, aligning with President Donald Trump, asserted that vandalism caused the damage to the Reflecting Pool located on the National Mall. Trump claimed a 350-foot cut appeared in the pool’s liner during recent renovations. Burgum explained it as several cuts totaling that length. Repairs necessitate draining part of the pool shortly.
Repairs will proceed with the current contractor. Burgum praised the company’s work despite the vandalism, estimated to cost tens of thousands of dollars in repairs. This vandalism might constitute a felony due to the expense, akin to damaging other government properties. Trump had pledged earlier in the year to enhance the Pool before the nation’s 250th birthday on July Fourth, instructing it be painted “American flag blue.” Following completion, an algae bloom developed, affecting the water quality, and portions of the new coating appeared to peel.
On Independence Day, safety concerns regarding fireworks led to the pool’s closure. The ongoing debate about the Reflecting Pool ties into Trump’s larger vision to renovate Washington landmarks, including the White House, nearing the end of his term.
Authorities have arrested multiple individuals related to the Reflecting Pool vandalism. Former Olympian David Hearn faces charges for property destruction. U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro described Hearn’s actions as deliberate, causing over $1,000 in damage by tearing sealant with both hands and acting aggressively when confronted. Hearn’s attorneys criticized these charges, including the involvement of the Democracy Defenders Fund, labeling them as an example of government overreach based on a false narrative.
Burgum did not provide a direct response about any photographic evidence of vandalism or address Hearn’s potential 10-year prison term, the legal maximum for such charges. He stated, “The courts will decide.”
No-bid contracts awarded to companies with prior Trump affiliations cast further controversy on the project. Green Water Solutions of Ohio received $1.7 million to install a purification system, while Atlantic Industrial Coatings of Virginia secured $14.7 million for coating and waterproofing. Several Democratic senators and House members are calling for a thorough investigation into the pool project.
A letter from six senators highlighted the need for transparency concerning the project failures and accountability for taxpayer money spent.
