McMorrow Suspends Senate Campaign Amid Challenges

2 hours ago 0

Mallory McMorrow, a Democratic state senator from Michigan, ended her campaign for the U.S. Senate on Sunday, facing challenges in polling and fundraising against her primary rivals. In a social media post, she expressed gratitude to her supporters while announcing the suspension of her campaign.

McMorrow aimed for a centrist position between her main opponents, Representative Haley Stevens, backed by party establishment, and Dr. Abdul El-Sayed, a progressive with support from figures like Senator Bernie Sanders. Her departure narrows the field to Stevens, a moderate, and El-Sayed, who previously challenged Gretchen Whitmer in the 2018 gubernatorial primary.

Stevens enjoys endorsements from Senator Chuck Schumer and pro-Israel groups. In contrast, El-Sayed, a former public health official, holds backing from progressive Democrats. Despite her campaign’s suspension, McMorrow chose not to endorse a candidate but pledged support for the eventual winner.

The Michigan Senate seat, currently held by retiring Democrat Gary Peters, is pivotal for Democratic efforts to control the Senate in November. Retaining it is critical as Democrats need to secure their existing positions and gain four more to achieve a majority.

Republicans are expected to nominate former Representative Mike Rogers, who narrowly lost the 2024 Senate race. The primary election is set for August 4.

McMorrow, known for leveraging media appearances, faced difficulties after criticizing El-Sayed for associating with Hasan Piker, a controversial figure. Her remarks did not resonate well with voters, failing to draw moderate support, while substantial funds boosted Stevens’ campaign.
