USA’s World Cup player Folarin Balogun will participate in the Round of 16 match against Belgium. This comes after controversy surrounding a red card he received in a prior game with Bosnia and Herzegovina. Balogun’s red card was issued after he accidentally stepped on defender Tarik Muharemovic’s foot. Referee Raphael Claus reviewed the incident with VAR before deciding on the card.
The The Athletic first reported Balogun’s status, noting FIFA’s disciplinary code has provisions for suspending disciplinary actions. If a similar infraction occurs during the probationary period, the suspension may be revoked, and sanctions enforced. FOX Sports confirmed Balogun’s clearance to play, indicating the play should not have been escalated to Claus.
FIFA decided to suspend Balogun’s sanction for a probation period of one year. U.S. Soccer responded, expressing satisfaction with the decision and eagerness for the Belgium match in Seattle. They emphasized appreciating the fans’ ongoing support.
Balogun, who scored against Bosnia, addressed the media about the incident. He emphasized the unintentional nature of the foul and believed a yellow card would have been appropriate. “I never want to react out of anger and emotion. There’s still lots of people we’re inspiring,” Balogun stated.
U.S. Soccer found no grounds for appealing the initial decision. According to Article 9.6 of the 2026 World Cup regulations, referees’ decisions on play-related facts are final and cannot be appealed unless FIFA’s Disciplinary Code specifies otherwise.
Despite the procedural hurdles, Balogun and the team are optimistic about their upcoming performance against Belgium. The team’s focus remains on preparing for the match and demonstrating exemplary conduct on the field.
