The White House released a report accusing the leadership of the Smithsonian Institution of promoting radical activism, especially targeting the National Museum of American History. This report suggests President Donald Trump may want to replace current leadership with his own appointments.
Released by the White House Domestic Policy Council on Independence Day, the report comes amid Trump’s campaign to transform Washington’s cultural and historic institutions. In March, Trump announced an executive order aimed at cutting funding for Smithsonian programs advancing ‘divisive narratives’ and ideologies he viewed as improper.
The report stated, ‘The Smithsonian Institution, and the National Museum of American History in particular, under its current leadership and current interpretive ideology, cannot be trusted to tell America’s story honestly and in a way that is inspiring, unifying, and worthy of our great republic.’
Authored by a former top Trump speechwriter, the report claims that the museum’s mission has shifted from straightforward history education to extreme political activism aimed at transforming the country.
The Smithsonian has not yet commented on the report. Lonnie Bunch, the first African American to lead the Smithsonian, recently discussed on NBC’s ‘Meet the Press’ that aspiring towards a more perfect union motivates his work.
Anthea M. Hartig, the first woman to direct the National Museum of American History, adds to the leadership highlighted by Trump’s criticism. The president’s efforts to change the Smithsonian are his latest in aligning cultural institutions with conservative ideals. Previous actions include installing himself as chairman of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and pressuring Columbia University to alter policies under financial threats.
In Philadelphia, the administration reinstalled interpretive panels at a historical site, despite criticisms they whitewash slavery’s history at President George Washington’s home. Advocates worry Trump’s version presents a glorified view of history.
Governor Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania, a potential future presidential candidate, criticized Trump on CNN’s ‘State of the Union.’ Shapiro emphasized the importance of presenting America’s full history, allowing people to form their own conclusions.
‘If we understand where we came from, we’re going to have a better path forward,’
Shapiro commented.
Trump’s Domestic Policy Council disagrees, asserting that the museum detracts from American institutions and ideals. Calling for ‘Restoring Truth and Sanity to American History,’ the report claims the museum has succumbed to a radical ideology opposed to America’s narrative.
