Typhoon Bavi Strikes Guam and Northern Mariana Islands

1 hour ago 0

On Monday, Typhoon Bavi began impacting Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands with severe winds and heavy rainfall. The storm, classified as a Category 5 hurricane, prompted warnings of potential flash flooding in the U.S. territories.

Bavi made contact with Rota, a part of the Northern Mariana Islands, and brought significant concerns according to the National Weather Service. As of Monday afternoon, no fatalities or injuries had been reported in the affected areas.

The Commonwealth Utilities Corporation reported a power outage on the capital island of Saipan, starting Sunday night as the storm approached. The Guam Power Authority noted that the strong winds and gusts downed power lines, causing further outages, with expectations of more disruptions.

Forecasts indicated that the region could receive between 12 to 16 inches of rain by Tuesday, potentially reaching 20 inches in Rota. Typhoon warnings and flood watches were issued, and Rota faced an extreme wind threat.

Authorities in Guam, with a population of roughly 150,000, initiated the highest level of a four-tier alert system and opened evacuation centers. Access to U.S. military facilities was restricted, emphasizing the urgent response to the powerful storm.

Flights at the main airports in Guam and the Northern Marianas were canceled as of Monday afternoon, and several ports ceased operations. This region is dealing with the aftermath of Typhoon Sinlaku, which caused substantial damage in April.

Further updates will follow as the situation progresses.
