Explosions hit Kyiv on Monday, marking the second major attack in less than a week as Russia launched ballistic missiles into the Ukrainian capital. This occurred just before a NATO summit is set to begin in Ankara, Turkey.
President Volodymyr Zelensky had warned residents about a potential massive strike on Kyiv. Hours after the warning, loud blasts were reported. The regional military administration confirmed the presence of flying ballistic missiles. Mayor Vitali Klitschko advised residents to remain in shelters for safety.
Tymur Tkachenko, who leads Kyiv’s military administration, reported seven fatalities and at least twenty-four people injured. Emergency services were actively managing multiple fires and assisting those trapped in damaged apartment buildings.
Thick black smoke filled the skyline, adding to the city’s distress. The recent attack follows Thursday’s assault with missiles and drones, resulting in 31 deaths and injuring over 100 people.
The NATO summit, set to commence on Tuesday, is expected to heavily focus on the alliance’s response to Russia’s war against Ukraine.
