Holiday Heartbreak: StubHub Ticket Troubles at the World Cup

1 hour ago 0

Jeremy Wright from Austin, Texas, faced unexpected challenges when purchasing World Cup tickets as a Christmas gift for his wife, Sarah. She wanted to attend the World Cup more than anything else, expressing her wish to Newsweek. Jeremy, unfamiliar with FIFA’s official ballot process for ticket purchases, initially turned to StubHub for tickets.

Ahead of the World Cup, StubHub has been a popular platform for fans to buy and sell tickets to matches they couldn’t get through FIFA. Jeremy paid $1,158 for two tickets to a game in Dallas, a gift that thrilled Sarah. The day was special for her, as they were set to watch Japan play against the Netherlands, a country tied to her Dutch heritage.

The Dallas Journey

The Wrights undertook an eight-hour drive to Dallas, incurring an additional $800 for hotel expenses. Sarah prepared for the occasion, sporting Netherlands soccer attire. Things took a sour turn when an email from StubHub informed Jeremy that their tickets were no longer available.

“I had gotten the Netherlands soccer scarf—you know, the whole nine yards”—Sarah

Jeremy later discovered StubHub tickets aren’t guaranteed, learning how the service operates through further research. The ‘FanProtect 100% Guarantee’ had promised valid tickets or substitutes, yet when they sought replacements, none were shown as available on StubHub’s app.

Prices online for remaining tickets ranged from $2,200 to $3,500, a steep increase from their original purchase. The Wrights chose to request a refund. Their planned visit soured, considering watching the game at a nearby bar futile due to the initial disappointment and long drive home.

Social Media Frustrations

Jeremy shared the incident on social media and received responses from others affected by similar StubHub issues. Mark Cooley experienced ticket troubles for the USA’s match against Turkey after booking flights from Chicago and Oregon. Majid Lagzian also faced ticket issues after purchasing tickets for Germany vs. Ivory Coast. Despite promises of replacements under the ‘FanProtect Guarantee,’ viable alternatives weren’t provided.

Glen Albuja bought tickets for Ecuador vs. Germany but faced cancellation problems weeks before the match. StubHub’s links to alternative tickets showed no availability, offering only refunds instead.

StubHub’s Official Response

A spokesperson for StubHub responded to Newsweek, acknowledging the World Cup as a significant investment for fans. The company cited ticket technology infrastructure from event organizers as the key issue disrupting transactions, alongside newly introduced transfer restrictions.

“Some organizers take anti-competitive actions and try to limit where tickets can be bought or sold”—StubHub spokesperson

StubHub maintains its stance on empowering fans with flexibility and choices, asserting their ‘FanProtect Guarantee’ provides security. A personal apology and offer for an upgraded World Cup semifinal experience in Dallas were extended to Jeremy and Sarah Wright.

Others like Cooley, Lagzian, and Albuja received replacement tickets. StubHub urges affected users to contact them for specialized World Cup support. They pinpointed the event organizer’s app limitations as contributors to frequent issues among ticket holders.
