Folarin Balogun’s journey in soccer is compelling. Kevin Betsy, who worked with Balogun at Arsenal’s under-23s and in the England youth setup, recalls how the striker honed his skill in scoring goals from a young age. Born in Brooklyn, New York, Balogun was raised in east London and quickly made an impact at the World Cup. He scored for the U.S. in their opening 4-1 victory against Paraguay and played a pivotal role in securing wins against Australia and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Balogun’s performance was temporarily interrupted by a red card, overturned after intervention from U.S. officials and support from President Trump. This incident marked another chapter in the story of the 25-year-old striker. He was born while his mother, Florence, was unable to fly back to England due to her pregnancy. After his birth, the family moved to east London where Balogun’s soccer journey began.
Playing for Aldersbrook Athletic, Balogun caught the eye of Arsenal scouts. Despite initial setbacks, including being released after his first trial, he persevered and eventually joined Arsenal at 10. His time in the Arsenal academy was marked by impressive goal-scoring, demonstrating his potential early on with 25 goals in 19 appearances for the under-18s. By February 2019, he had secured his first professional contract with Arsenal.
“He always wanted to do extras, like 20- or 30-minute shooting sessions,” Betsy recalls. “His dedication was second to none.”
Success continued at Arsenal’s under-23s, but a need for regular first-team football led to loans. His spell at Middlesbrough was challenging, with three goals in 18 appearances. However, this did not deter him, as coach Duncan Watmore noted Balogun’s finishing skills and mental strength.
After Middlesbrough, Balogun flourished at Reims in France, scoring 21 goals in 37 games. His subsequent move to Monaco for €40 million solidified his status as one of the top forwards in Ligue 1. U.S. national team involvement further defined him, opting to represent the U.S. in 2023. His mother’s influence was clear, maintaining that his U.S. roots mattered.
His time abroad enriched his development. Balogun’s experience at Reims, augmented by personal coaching sessions with Saul Isaksson-Hurst, enhanced his skills and mental fortitude. “My goal is to be one of the best No 9s,” Isaksson-Hurst reports Balogun saying, showcasing his drive.
During the Copa America and the World Cup, his performances attracted attention from top clubs. His trajectory from Aldersbrook to the World Cup underscores a journey marked by tenacity, adaptability, and talent.
Integral to his growth were the various coaches and teammates at different stages of his career. Coaches like Ian Foster have praised Balogun’s technical prowess and game intelligence. His professional achievements and personal experiences intertwine to create a narrative of ambition and success, marked by cultural and national influences.
