WASHINGTON (AP) — Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell is continuing his recovery in a hospital as the Senate is currently out of session. His staff conveyed this update last week, yet details about his condition remain scarce, with no clear indication of whether he will return to the Capitol upon the Senate’s reconvening next week.
McConnell was admitted to the hospital on June 14, according to a statement from his office, mentioning that he is receiving excellent care. A subsequent statement released a week later noted his absence from voting. On Thursday, a new update expressed that McConnell is improving and appreciates the support he is receiving during his hospital stay. Since then, his office has provided no further updates, and a request for comment was not returned on Monday.
His hospitalization adds to a history of health challenges faced over recent years, posing complications for Senate Republicans as they manage a narrow majority ahead of the upcoming midterm elections. McConnell, aged 84, stands out as the longest-serving Senate leader before stepping down from this prestigious role. He is completing his final term, which concludes in January.
In March 2023, while serving as Republican leader, McConnell was hospitalized after sustaining a concussion from a fall at a Washington hotel. This incident resulted in his absence from work for several weeks. Upon his return, he experienced momentary lapses during press conferences, which required assistance from colleagues and staff. The following year, he fell again, spraining his wrist after leaving a GOP luncheon.
McConnell’s health journey includes battling polio during early childhood, consequently facing mobility challenges as an adult, particularly with walking and climbing stairs. In 2019, he tripped and fell at his Kentucky home, necessitating surgery for a fractured shoulder.
Having first entered the Senate in 1984, McConnell held the Republican leader position from 2007 until last year, serving both as majority and minority leader. Despite his recent health struggles, he remains active in his duties as a senator, attending sessions and often utilizing a wheelchair.
