Graham Platner Faces New Allegations Amid Campaign Turmoil

2 hours ago 0

U.S. Senate candidate Graham Platner is facing intense scrutiny after being accused of removing condoms during intimate encounters with his ex-girlfriend Lyndsey Fifield. This accusation came just 24 hours after he was initially accused of rape, adding to the growing controversy surrounding his campaign.

According to a report by The Washington Post, Fifield claimed Platner removed condoms without her consent, even after she explicitly instructed him to use them. “He would pull condoms off,” she stated. “He would do it in a sneaky way. He wouldn’t tell me.” Previously, Fifield also alleged physical misconduct by Platner during their relationship, which included instances of him allegedly grabbing her forcefully and twisting her arm.

“I confronted him both during and after [sex] because he knew that I was not on birth control,” Fifield told the Post.

Despite the growing allegations, Platner’s supporters have largely dismissed Fifield, suggesting her background as a past employee of The Heritage Foundation makes her a conservative operative. His campaign labeled her latest claims as “categorically false and politically motivated.” Platner seeks to challenge Republican Maine Senator Susan Collins.

Adding to Platner’s troubles, another woman, Jenny Racicot, accused him of rape. She detailed an incident where Platner allegedly entered her home in a drunken state and sexually assaulted her. “I remember him grabbing my pelvis and being really forceful of me,” Racicot recounted, claiming Platner was “almost blackout drunk” during the assault.

Platner has denied these allegations. In response to the accusations, his campaign is reassessing their position as a crucial decision deadline approaches. Platner must decide whether to withdraw from the race by July 13 to allow another Democratic candidate to take his place before the general election.

The allegations have sparked significant backlash from previous supporters, including prominent figures like Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., and Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., both of whom withdrew their endorsements and urged Platner to step aside.

“Now more than ever we need leaders who reflect our values. There can be no tolerance for sexual assault,” Warren stated.

Sanders echoed these sentiments, urging Platner to withdraw to address the serious allegations against him. Prominent supporters emphasize the importance of focusing on the Senate election in Maine while holding accountable those involved in these severe accusations.
