In Brussels, several European lawmakers are advocating for an inquiry within the European Parliament regarding FIFA President Gianni Infantino’s involvement in a controversial decision. This revolves around U.S. striker Folarin Balogun being allowed to play despite a previous red card.
Balogun received a red card during the United States’ match against Bosnia-Herzegovina on July 1. Typically, this would render him ineligible for the team’s next game. However, his suspension was lifted by FIFA for a subsequent match following the intervention of U.S. President Donald Trump with Infantino, supporting the 25-year-old athlete.
European Parliament members Barry Andrews, Lara Wolters, and Niels Fuglsang have issued a joint statement criticizing FIFA’s decision to alter the red card suspension rule during the tournament. They have described it as a “disgrace and a perversion of justice.” Their statement alleges that Infantino and FIFA are yielding to demands from the Trump administration.
These legislators have appealed to national football associations within EU countries, urging them to prompt the FIFA Ethics Committee to investigate Infantino’s conduct. They are questioning whether Trump’s influence played a role in lifting the suspension and are seeking scrutiny over “other potential breaches of political neutrality,” such as Trump receiving the FIFA Peace Prize.
FIFA has defended its actions, indicating that the decision to lift the suspension was made by a disciplinary committee. Meanwhile, the lawmakers have gathered support from 35 colleagues who have signed their letter.
They emphasized that the essence of sport lies in impartial and transparent rules. They assert that when Infantino allows political pressure to affect which players can participate, fairness is compromised.
