Novak Djokovic secured a historic victory against Felix Auger-Aliassime in the Wimbledon quarterfinals. The match, lasting 5 hours and 15 minutes, was the longest quarterfinal in the tournament’s history.
Djokovic, age 39, emerged victorious with scores of 7-6 (12-10), 3-6, 6-3, 6-7 (7-4), 7-6 (10-4). The intense match included a heated debate over whether to close Centre Court’s roof.
After the second set, tournament supervisor Denise Parnell suggested closing the roof due to evening conditions. Djokovic argued for keeping it open, emphasizing the outdoor nature of the tournament.
“You don’t want to get to 8.30pm? It’s 7.40pm now. We can play a whole another set outdoors. We’re an outdoor tournament,” Djokovic told Parnell.
Discussions referenced Jannik Sinner’s previous match, but Djokovic focused on his game. He expressed frustration at inconsistent application of rules regarding the roof closure.
Despite the decision to close the roof, Djokovic maintained focus and won the third set 6-3. His victory made him the oldest man to reach the Wimbledon semifinals in over five decades.
Looking ahead, Djokovic will compete against defending champion Jannik Sinner in the semifinals. The match is scheduled for Friday on Centre Court.
