Following a severe knee injury during his UFC 329 fight against Max Halloway, Conor McGregor is facing a challenging journey back to the Octagon. The 38-year-old fighter from Ireland has taken to social media to declare his intention to return post-surgery to repair his right knee. This upcoming bout is intended to fulfill the last fight on his UFC contract.
If this is to be McGregor’s swan song in the ring, numerous contenders are eager for the chance to face him. Fighters like Halloway, Michael Chandler, Nate Diaz, Justin Gaethje, and Ilia Topuria would all generate significant viewership. However, McGregor might have his sights set on a rematch with Dustin Poirier.
Poirier, aged 37, retired after his UFC 318 fight against Halloway for the ‘BMF’ title. Yet, he has expressed interest in a potential fourth showdown with McGregor, saying it could tempt him out of retirement.
“Whenever he is healed up, hit me up, Conor,” Poirier announced via MMA Junkie. “I’ll come back and whip you again. I’d come back to whip him again — at 170.”
McGregor and Poirier’s history includes three prior encounters. McGregor emerged victorious in their first clash with a first-round TKO in under two minutes at UFC 178 in 2014. Poirier claimed the next two bouts, both via TKO. Notably, their last match concluded after McGregor suffered a left leg fracture at the end of the first round.
In their second encounter, Poirier defeated McGregor with a striking finish. This victory earned him the Performance of the Night honor and propelled him into contention for the lightweight title.
