An American seismologist, Youlin Chen, who conducted contract research for the U.S. government on North Korean nuclear tests, has been detained in China since November 2024. Chen’s family reports that he was apprehended by Chinese state security officers at a Beijing airport while preparing to return home to Boston.
The family has publicly addressed his case for the first time, hoping to pressure China into releasing him. They claim the espionage allegations are baseless and possibly linked to his research activities in the U.S.
The detention draws attention to the dangers faced by scientists and others involved in work deemed sensitive by Chinese authorities. People born in China appear particularly vulnerable, as seen with previous instances where Chinese leadership under Xi Jinping has intensified efforts against supposed espionage or subversive activities.
In May, President Trump raised Chen’s case during discussions with Xi Jinping in Beijing, with the hope that he will address it again in a September summit in Washington.
Chen’s wife, Yufang Rong, expressed hope that Xi would correct the mistake of arresting a U.S. academic, allowing Chen’s return.
