Conservative Influencer Nick Shirley Addresses Misinformation on Family Connection

1 month ago 0

Conservative influencer Nick Shirley has firmly denied claims circulating online that suggest he is related to Tyler Robinson, the man charged with killing Charlie Kirk. To refute the claim, Shirley publicly shared his family tree.

Rumors began spreading on social media platform X, alleging that Shirley and Robinson are related through Robinson’s mother, who was labeled as Shirley’s aunt. Additionally, it was suggested that Vice President JD Vance and others from the Trump administration had promoted Shirley shortly after Kirk’s assassination.

Shirley, known for his investigative journalism focused on alleged daycare fraud in Minnesota, rejected the claim. “This is completely false. Here is my family tree for proof,” he posted on X, tagging Community Notes to support his statement. His family tree shows a lineage through the Crowley family on his mother’s side, with no mention of Robinson or his relatives.

A label from Community Notes was added to the original post, refuting the claim based on Shirley’s own evidence, and indicating the original poster’s comments were influenced by Grok, an AI chatbot from Elon Musk’s xAI.

The rumor appears to have originated from a Grok chatbot response, circulating through screenshots and replies on X. In one verified reply from the Grok account, the chatbot incorrectly linked Robinson and Shirley as cousins, naming Amber Jones Robinson and Brooke T. Jones or Shirley as their mothers. These names do not appear in Shirley’s family tree.

In another response, Grok conveyed that no verified evidence connects Shirley to Robinson, suggesting that references to half-cousins are likely unconfirmed rumors based on coincidental overlaps in Utah names.

Shirley has previously stated, including in a December appearance on the PBD Podcast, that he was the last guest on Kirk’s show before the fatal shooting in Orem, Utah, on September 10. Shirley noted that Kirk had texted him the night before his invitation to appear on the show.

Robinson, age 22, is facing charges related to Kirk’s killing. Following his preliminary hearing, Utah Governor Spencer Cox reported that Robinson’s family described him as having developed strong political opinions and criticizing Kirk in recent years.

This false cousin accusation adds to a broader pattern of misinformation associated with the Kirk shooting since September. Fact-checkers have identified multiple inaccurate claims regarding Robinson’s identity, political affiliation, and background shortly after his arrest.
