The Iconic Photograph: Messi and Yamal’s Story Through Time

In July 2024, photographer Joan Monfort recounted the unique challenge of capturing a photograph that has since become iconic. This image features a young Lionel Messi, then 20 years old, with a baby named Lamine Yamal. Taken in December 2007 for a charity calendar by Barcelona’s club foundation and Diario Sport, its proceeds supported UNICEF and other local charities.

The annual initiative involved Barcelona players being photographed with children. Among these, Yamal, who is now a rising star in football, was paired with Messi. This unusual collaboration gained attention as Yamal recently rose to prominence, and is set to meet Messi for the first time on the field during the 2026 World Cup final at MetLife Stadium, with Spain facing Argentina.

One of the images shows Messi holding baby Yamal in a towel. These images resurfaced during the 2024 European Championship when Yamal’s father shared them online. Reflecting on those early days of Messi’s career, Monfort described how destiny played a pivotal role. During this time, Messi had already secured two La Liga titles and a Champions League win but was still establishing himself among more seasoned players.

Monfort explained that capturing such a photo demanded patience. “You have a list of 12 players and must wait for the right moment.” Despite challenges, especially with the interaction required between a player and a baby, mother Sheila Ebana’s presence was essential for the child’s comfort.

Monfort tried ensuring that each family received a copy of these significant moments. Yamal’s mother made considerable efforts to bring her child from Mataro, 40 kilometers from Barcelona. Later, Yamal began traveling regularly for training, joining La Masia in 2014. His development has been impressive, making his La Liga debut at 15 and representing Spain internationally by 16. Now, Yamal stands as a key player for Spain, earning accolades by wearing Messi’s famed No 10 jersey for Barcelona.

This photograph represents a rare connection between two iconic figures. Monfort discussed how, in today’s world of shared images, such unique stories continue to emerge, likening it to the renowned photograph of a young Pep Guardiola applauding Terry Venables in 1986, showcasing Barcelona’s storied past.

Monfort remains active in photography, working with Diario AS and Agence France-Presse. He expressed amazement when the photo went viral during Euro 2024. “They could hardly believe it. It surprised all of us.” The photograph’s fame endures, signifying the incredible luck and timing that brought these two talents together at such an early stage. Monfort concluded, “It’s the most famous photo I’ve taken in my life.”
