Tanner Dane spent his early days jammin’ in an attic with his friends, who later became his bandmates. They started with cover songs but soon developed their unique sound, a blend of bluesy, alternative rock, and soul influences. Using GarageBand, they self-produced music, burning their creations onto CDs and distributing them around town. Their approach to music was driven by passion and creativity, not marketing strategies.

Years later, Dane continues to embrace this grassroots method of music-making. Now a Chicago-based artist, he performs both solo and with his band, Hollyy. Over the past year and a half, they have gained attention in the local music scene by busking at AIDS Garden Chicago in Lakeview. Their ad-hoc performances quickly became popular, drawing in hundreds of fans from Chicago and neighboring states like Indiana and Wisconsin.

These performances are announced spontaneously on social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok, often just a day or two before they take place. Despite the short notice, fans eagerly follow their updates, making every performance a highly anticipated event. This summer, they held three such shows, each drawing large crowds to Belmont Rocks where attendees fill the space with picnic blankets and energy.

Tanner Dane’s deep-rooted connection to music started at home. He and his sister received their first musical instruments, a guitar and drums at ages 11 and 13. Their mother, who sings and plays piano, introduced them to music, continuing a family tradition. Dane’s grandfather loved classical music and built a sound system from scratch, passing on a love for music to his children.

Dane’s childhood friends also played a significant role in his musical journey. They spent countless hours practicing in Dane’s attic, enduring the summer heat without air conditioning, driven by their shared love for music. Their band, The Reverends, released a record when Dane was 14, recorded in a Chicago studio thanks to free recording time won in a competition. This experience solidified their determination to make music and perform.

Initially, the band aimed to achieve widespread success, even dreaming of touring. However, as members headed to college, the band naturally paused their activities. During this time, Dane pursued political science, contemplating law school but ultimately finding his way back to music.

Reconnecting with past bandmates, Dane formed Hollyy with Rafael Soto-Marquez and others from his network. They established themselves in Chicago’s music scene, writing and performing relentlessly for over six years. Throughout this process, Dane began writing solo material, initially as a personal outlet during challenging times. His efforts led to a solo record deal and the release of two EPs. Hollyy also released their first full album, gaining momentum as fans embraced their sound.

A New Chapter with Lake Shows

Inspired to busk, Soto-Marquez’s technical skills enabled the band to perform anywhere with solar-powered gear. After an encouraging test, they seized the opportunity to perform regularly at the lakefront. Although faced with minor legal issues due to their performances, local support remains strong.

The lakeside shows have attracted diverse audiences, including individuals and families alike. For many, these performances symbolize joyous communal experiences amid the hustle of urban life. Fans gather with food and drinks, enjoying the music while participating in various activities, from crafts to casual conversations.
