Former DSA Vice Chair Defends Radical Platform

Former Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) vice chair Bhaskar Sunkara supports the growing influence and radical positions of the organization, including the proposal to abolish the U.S. Senate. CNN political commentator and Democrat Van Jones criticized far-left activists, warning that their views on issues like Hamas, prisons, and immigration could lead the Democratic Party astray. As socialist-backed candidates celebrated primary wins, Jones emphasized the need for the party to maintain its core values.

“Yes, we want our Democratic Party to be a big tent. But we don’t need ‘party poopers’,” Jones said on X, alluding to a Substack post of his. He accused some DSA activists of adopting stances on Hamas, policing, prisons, and immigration that fall outside the progressive movement.

Jones, a self-identified progressive Democrat, highlighted policies he considers essential to his political identity, such as criminal justice reform, the Green New Deal, and Medicare for All. He criticized some democratic socialists for allegedly promoting ideas that diverge significantly from these principles.

“I’m a strong Democrat, with a winning bipartisan track record. I’m rooted in progressive ideals and policies: criminal justice reform, Green New Deal, Medicare for All, free education, clean air and water,” he stated.

Jones disputed the claim that the far-left simply seeks Nordic-style social democracy. He voiced enthusiasm for those policies but questioned how certain far-left proposals, like abolishing law enforcement or borders, relate to traditional progressive aims.

The DSA’s “Workers Deserve More” program advocates for reallocating police funding to public services, a step toward eliminating police and prisons. It also calls for abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement, ending immigration detention, legalizing migration, and granting amnesty regardless of immigration status.

Jones expressed concern that mainstream Democrats, frustrated with both Republicans and their party’s establishment, might overlook extremist proposals. He referenced the DSA’s electoral success, which includes victories in Colorado and New York, as evidence of their growing influence.

“The Democratic Socialists of America are winning elections — and sending waves of joy and terror through the Democratic Party,” Jones commented in a previous Substack entry.
