Celebrations in Madrid as Spain’s World Cup Winning Soccer Team Returns

Spain’s World Cup-winning soccer team is about to make a grand return home. Their arrival on Monday will be marked by a parade through central Madrid. Royalty and Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez will welcome the 26-man squad before they embark on their journey.

The parade will take the players on an open-top bus from near Moncloa Palace to Cibeles Square. This location is special, as it is where Spanish national teams and fans have traditionally gathered to celebrate victories.

Spain secured the World Cup trophy by defeating Argentina 1-0 in the final held at East Rutherford, New Jersey. This marks Spain’s second victory in the World Cup history, the first being in 2010 in South Africa.

Celebrations erupted in the Spanish capital after the final match. Thousands of fans filled the streets, coming from various bars and restaurants. Many wore Spanish flags and team colors to show their support.

Key areas like Madrid’s Puerta de Sol and other major squares were packed with supporters singing, dancing, and setting off fireworks. Car horns added to the festive atmosphere throughout the city. Fans continued their celebrations well into Monday morning.

Victor Álvarez, a 19-year-old fan, expressed his excitement, saying, “I’m very happy. I’ve slept three or four hours, but for the team, I’ll do whatever it takes.” This win and the Women’s World Cup title won by Spain in 2023 make Spain the first nation to hold both titles simultaneously.

A tragic incident dampened celebrations when local authorities reported the death of a 13-year-old boy. He died after a fountain in Salamanca, northwest of Madrid, collapsed while he was celebrating with friends.

The triumph is especially significant for young Spanish fans, many witnessing the men’s team win the trophy for the first time. As the team returns, supporters have gathered at Madrid’s Barajas Airport to greet them. The arrivals hall is filled with fans wearing team jerseys and waving flags.

Supporters are also readying near Cibeles Square. Despite the rising temperatures expected to reach 35 Celsius (95 Fahrenheit), fans have secured spots armed with umbrellas to shield themselves from the sun.
