U.S. Marine Corps Air Station Futenma on Okinawa has become the center of attention after the arrest of a U.S. Marine. Japanese police arrested the 20-year-old Marine on suspicion of robbing and murdering a 39-year-old woman in Naha, Okinawa’s capital. The incident occurred early Saturday, with the Marine allegedly taking the woman’s wallet and backpack.
Reports indicate the victim was found dead in her hotel room, suggesting strangulation. Security footage showed the suspect entering the hotel with the victim and leaving alone. Police apprehended him in Naha’s entertainment district later that night.
Okinawa Gov. Genta Koja voiced strong criticism over the incident. He highlighted ongoing concerns about safety and the impact of U.S. military bases on local residents. Koja remarked on the insufficient discipline and education of troops stationed in Okinawa. Approximately 25,000 U.S. troops are based in Okinawa, playing a critical role in the Japan-U.S. military alliance amidst rising tensions with China.
Okinawans have long expressed concerns over noise, pollution, and crime linked to the U.S. bases. These concerns have strained relations with Japan’s central government. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi condemned the crime and demanded the U.S. military improve discipline and cooperation with Japanese authorities. Following the incident, Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi summoned U.S. Ambassador George Glass to convey Japan’s discontent.
The U.S. Marine Corps confirmed the suspect’s assignment to the III Marine Expeditionary Force on Okinawa. It emphasized cooperation with the investigation and the expectation for Marines to uphold high behavioral standards. The Futenma base location has been contentious for decades, with local protests against its presence due to historical tensions and incidents, such as the 1995 rape case that stirred significant protests.
The continuous news of crimes and delayed reports involving U.S. personnel has fueled local frustration. Okinawa continues to be a focal point for discussions on the presence and conduct of U.S. military personnel in Japan.
