President Donald Trump is set to attend the rescheduled White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA) dinner on Friday evening. The event, originally disrupted by a shooting incident, will take place at the Waldorf Astoria in Washington. This venue is a change from its traditional location at the Washington Hilton.

The Rescheduled Event Details

The WHCA dinner will feature a mix of politicians, journalists, media executives, and celebrity guests. The event will be streamed live on C-SPAN, with coverage starting at 6 p.m. ET, showing arrivals, interviews, and speeches.

Background of the Rescheduling

The dinner in July serves to replace the original event from April 25, which ended abruptly due to gunfire at the Washington Hilton. An armed suspect breached security, prompting a swift evacuation led by Secret Service agents. Cole Tomas Allen, the suspect, faces multiple charges, including counts related to attempted assassination.

WHCA President Weijia Jiang emphasized that the event aims to support press freedom and journalism. Enhanced security and new access procedures will be implemented to prevent any future incidents.

“We will not allow an act of violence to have the last word,” Jiang stated.

Entertainment and Attendance

The dinner will feature mentalist Oz Pearlman as the entertainer, diverging from the usual comedic performances. Pearlman was set to perform during the April incident. President Trump will attend, joined by senior administration figures such as White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt and FBI Director Kash Patel, among others.

Key figures like First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio will not be attending. Journalists, scholarship recipients, and award winners are also expected. Funds have been raised to support the return of scholarship recipients to Washington for the event.

Trump previously boycotted the dinner during his first term. His attendance marks a significant moment as this rescheduled event will celebrate the First Amendment and assert the continuation of the annual gathering.

Security and Venue Considerations

The April shooting motivated discussions about security improvements at the White House. President Trump announced plans for a large ballroom, intended to provide a secure venue for events. This project, part of the East Wing modernization, emphasizes national security.

The construction will replace a former East Wing structure, funded entirely by private donations. “It’s not going to cost taxpayers a dime,” Karoline Leavitt stated.
