Christopher Nolan’s film “The Odyssey” has captured audiences and the box office. It has earned $123 million domestically and over $263 million globally during its debut weekend. With $18 million made on Monday and Wednesday and $21 million on Tuesday, the film’s gross surpassed $320 million in less than a week.
In stark contrast, this summer faced challenges with franchise fatigue affecting multiple releases. Disney’s live-action “Moana,” featuring Dwayne Johnson, opened with just $43 million domestically. The film, costing $250 million, has grossed $186 million globally, risking a $100 million loss.
Similarly, “Supergirl,” released last month, generated only $37 million in domestic sales in its initial weekend. It may not reach $150 million worldwide, marking disappointment for Warner Bros. compared to the previous “Superman” film’s $600 million global earnings.
Other franchises have not met expectations. “Minions & Monsters” opened with $37 million domestically and totaled around $366 million worldwide, making it the poorest performer in the “Despicable Me” series. The previous installment, “Despicable Me 4,” made nearly $1 billion globally.
A Star Wars movie, “The Mandalorian & Grogu,” grossed $340 million worldwide, becoming the lowest-performing film in the franchise. 2018’s “Solo” earlier held that title with $392 million.
Despite these struggles, some films have thrived. “Toy Story 5” opened with $159 million domestically and aims to hit $1 billion globally. “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” earned $131 million domestically and surpassed $1 billion worldwide. “Scream 7” made over $200 million globally.
Original films have found success too. “Project Hail Mary,” starring Ryan Gosling, became Amazon Studios’ most successful with over $680 million globally. Lionsgate’s Michael Jackson biopic “Michael” gained over $1 billion, outperforming their past releases.
Low-budget horror film “Obsession” grossed over $400 million worldwide for Focus Features. “Backrooms,” another horror project, debuted at $81 million and exceeded $360 million globally, achieving A24’s revenue record.
The summer concludes with “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” an anticipated Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios release. As with previous successful films like “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” it aims to surpass past records. Yet, ongoing superhero fatigue poses a challenge to its success.
